Hana Burgess is a kaupapa Māori researcher, teacher, and artist. Grounded in whakapapa, her work explores Māori futurisms, envisioning how we can be in good relation with our mokopuna & tūpuna, beyond the confines of colonial conceptions of what it means to be.

Last year Hana debuted “Infinite Formations” as part of our “Te Tīmatanga” Britomart Huarahi Toi - showcasing large format editions of an original A5 zine she made for her love, Haylee Koroi.

On Infinite Formations: Hana shared that

“it is an exploration of love. Love that expands into and through my love for my whānau, my friends, and my communities. Love that extends from ngā atua, to our more than human relations - our moana, our awa, our maunga - our tuākana. Love that is rooted in whakapapa, in our pasts and futures, infinitely cascading from each of us.”

This year, alongside her love Haylee & the expanding love of their hoa tata, Ngaumu Jones & Atarangi Anderson, Hana will hold a zine workshop at the Albert Park Caretakers Cottage. Where, making together as whānau we will learn the power of collage, to reshape, reorder, and damage texts and images that reflect colonial imaginings of our worlds.

Come and be part of the infinite cascading of past and future. Where, together in a collective voice, we can speak back to that which is done to us, in our complex and expansive ways of relating to one another, as an act of refusal towards settler colonialism. Re-imagining and re-membering of our infinite relations.
