Moving Portraits are Going West's short, literary documentaries. The brief was simple; we asked for "a portrait of a story teller". These big-little films not only take you into the minds and lives of great Aotearoa writers; they also foster white hot collaborations between the filmmakers and the writers themselves.
Nathan Joe: Homecoming Poems
In poet Nathan Joe’s magnetic three poem meditation on home and homecoming, he explores the feelings of being caught between Christchurch and Auckland, between queerness and being Chinese-Kiwi.
Ultimately Lacks Polish
Proudly low-brow poet Freya Daly Sadgrove combines poetry with glam and punky theatrics, but faces harsh criticism in her attempt to make poetry accessible. Directed by Kathleen Winter.
Both incredible pieces are available to watch free online: https://www.goingwestfest.co.nz/movingportraits
"Homecoming Poems and Ultimately Lacks Polish are not only timely in capturing the zeitgeist of contemporary Aotearoa poetry, they are a snapshot of two young poets at an exciting and pivotal time in their careers." -Chris Tse, 'Capturing the Zeitgeist' Pantograph Punch
